I was fortunate enough to get to help in an alternative Christian high school last week called Pikes Peak Academy. It exists to build confidence and renew hope in teenagers who have involuntarily or voluntarily left high school without their diplomas. The staff and board members love on these kids that the world wants to forget. Twice a month the students take Life Skills courses where they get to choose between a variety of classes from cooking, to board games to arts and crafts or dodge ball. In these classes they learn team building, new hobbies, following directions and community interaction. It's pretty neat.
I'm a teacher by vocation. I've wanted to help, but couldn't commit on a weekly basis. So, when the opportunity was given at our church to bring ANY of our passions, interests, hobbies for a one-time day class, I jumped at the chance.
I didn't know what to expect and apparently at that school, it's wise to expect the unexpected. It was snowing pretty hard that day, so the kids that had signed up for the class, didn't show up for school, but were replaced by other students. A couple of the teachers joined us as well.
I have been invited back to do Mother's Day gifts and cards. Yeah! I know it's a small thing, but I hope that the students really enjoyed themselves and what they could create.
I'll be doing the craft time for a MOPS group next Thursday. I love being able to help groups like this. If you have a group in Colorado Springs that you want me to teach about rubber stamping,
email me and we can talk!
Happy Stampin'!
Linda:)
